If you are planning a trip to the Carretera Austral, Bahía Mansa is a perfect base to explore the area. I’ll share a suggested 4 or 5-day itinerary of unforgettable excursions that you can easily do from here.
Located on the shores of Lake General Carrera, just 5 km from Puerto Río Tranquilo on the way to Puerto Guadal, Bahía Mansa lives up to its name: a calm and protected bay. From the top of the property, upon entering, a majestic landscape unfolds before your eyes: the turquoise waters of the lake framed by imposing hills.
Day 1: Bahía Mansa Beach and Marble Chapels
From the property, you drive down to the edge of the lake, the departure point for kayaks and boats. This place is ideal for rowing because it is sheltered from the wind and is just steps away from the famous Marble Chapels, which can even be seen from the shore.
Traveler tip: book your tour in advance and choose the first morning departure, when the light highlights the lake and rock colors at their best. Whether by kayak or boat, exploring these formations with whimsical shapes and incredible tones is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Day 2: Explorers Valley and Explorers Park
Less than two hours by car from Bahía Mansa, you can enjoy a day trip to Valle Exploradores. From Puerto Río Tranquilo, take route X-728 toward Bahía Exploradores: it’s 57 km of gravel road that you travel slowly to admire the hanging glaciers, mountains, and forests.
Once at the Explorers Park, you will find activities for all tastes:
- Easy difficulty trekking: in less than an hour you reach viewpoints with views of the Exploradores Glacier, Mount San Valentín, and Lake Bayo.
- Canopy and interpretive trail with magnifying glass: perfect for families or those who want to learn more about the ecosystem.
- Glacier expeditions: recommended for the most adventurous, always with certified guides.
Day 3: Excursion to Laguna San Rafael
The jewel of northern Patagonia. From Bahía Mansa, you can join the classic excursion to Laguna San Rafael.
The trip lasts a full day: you leave around 7:00 am from Puerto Río Tranquilo, take land transportation to Bahía Exploradores, and from there you sail to the lagoon. The reward: sailing among floating icebergs and contemplating the imposing San Rafael Glacier as it crashes into the water with a roar.
An overwhelming experience that every traveler should live at least once.
